On a bitterly cold Mid December morning, a 25-year-old gentleman boarded a train from Dundee Train Station, destination – London King’s Cross Station.
From here, he would board the ship bound for India, and by 24th December, the said gentleman, Jack Mennie would be in Calcutta, India – ready to start what was to be a 30-year Engineering Career with Ludlow Jute Company. He started on Christmas Day!
Jack Mennie, my grandfather, travelled all these miles from his homeland in Scotland to carve out a more prosperous life for his wife and two sons. A third child, my mum, had not yet been born.
This man is the reason I am travelling with my husband to India today – travelling with my Indian husband.
Had my grandpa not embarked on this immense life change back in 1928, 96 years ago, I would surely not be making this trip today, and in fact, would not be making it with my husband – well not with THIS particular New Delhi man – how that came to be is another story!
‘Sliding Doors, Fate, The Universe, the Planets and the Stars, God’s will –
The life my grandpa chose is the undeniable reason I am sharing these particular stories with you – The reason we are travelling and living in India as the first of our Retirement Adventures!
In loving memory.
